It was called "Battling Tops," and was introduced by the now-defunct Ideal Toy Company in 1968. (They made one of my favorite childhood games, "Mouse Trap". Ah, the days when you didn't need batteries or a computer to have fun!) Here's an original commercial as proof:
"Seeing a murder on television can help work off one's antagonisms. And if you haven't any antagonisms, the commercials will give you some."--Alfred Hitchcock
Brilliant!!! Thanks Mike. I remember Mouse Trap, too. I first played it in the States when I was a kid but it was a couple of years before it came out over here. Computer games can be very exciting but isn't it funny how the simpliest of games seem to last in the memory so much longer? Another game that I've still got and my kids played with when they were small was Rebound.
