One of Britain's favourite TV character actors, Sam Kelly (19 December 1943 – 14 June 2014) was perhaps best known for two major roles on television; that of Captain Hans Geering in 'Allo 'Allo and Bunny Warren in the classic Ronnie Barker led sitcom, Porridge. He also had regular roles in On the Up as Dennis Waterman's chauffeur and We'll Think of Something as Les Brooks. From 1995 to 2003, he played Barbara's husband Ted in the sitcom Barbara. Away from comedy in 2004 he appeared in EastEnders playing Stan Porter. From May 2009, Kelly starred as the Wizard in London's West End Theatre production of the Wizard of Oz inspired musical Wicked. Kelly's later roles were as the ARP warden in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, and as the old boatman, John Merdell, in the ITV production of Dead Man's Folly. Kelly was admitted to a hospice on Friday 13 June 2014 and died peacefully early the next morning aged 70.
