Now that the 'special' holiday programming has finished, how well did you think our TV providers fared?
My view is that, on the whole, it was the usual depressing drivel, with one or two exceptions. I have to say that my holiday may had been slightly (but only slightly!) more enjoyable had my freeview recorder not suddenly developed a mind of its own!! It kept refusing to record some programmes, recorded stuff I didn't tell it to, and sometimes even refused to stop recording! (And I didn't buy it from a chatty cockney in a Yellow Robin Reliant van, before you ask!!)
Anyway, back to the subject! I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but personally I can never get enough of my all-time favourite film, Zulu . A couple of other good films around, like The Ipcress File and The Quiller Memorandum. I avoided the much-hyped Harry Potter like the plague , but watched Star Wars Episodes I and II - the first time I'd ever watched any film from that franchise - and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Highlights of normal programming were the Christmas Special of Vicious, the new Open All Hours (but it was trying to be too like the original, with David Jason sometime looking like he was doing an impersonation of Ronnie Barker), and, dare I say it?, Coronation Street.
But by far the best bit of entertainment over the Christmas period was an all-too-rare outing for The Plank, with Tommy Cooper and Eric Sykes - sheer brilliance!
I have to agree with all your choices,Tom. I liked Open All Hours, but not as much as I thought I might. Vicious was hilarious...but how could it fail with all those fine actors ? I enjoyed Sherlock very much...BC is becoming one of the best ''young'' actors of his generation.
I'm struggling to remember what I watched it was all so unforgettable. I enjoyed Open All Hours, hated Doctor Who. The Not Going Out Christmas episode made me laugh and Strictly was quite enjoyable (although I think Elaine Paige should have won). Channel 4 showed back-to-back episodes of Father Ted which I never fail to laugh at. The best of the bunch for me though was Call the Midwife which returns for a new series on Sunday.
