John Clive, who appeared in films including A Clockwork Orange, The Pink Panther and The Italian Job, has died at the age of 79. The actor and author, who was also the voice of John Lennon in Yellow Submarine and went on to become an international bestselling author, passed away following a short illness on 14 October 2012
John started his career at the age of fifteen and appeared on London's West End stages in plays such as Absurd Person Singular, The Wizard of Oz, Under Milk Wood, The Bandwagon at the Mermaid Theatre, The Winslow Boy, Young Woodley and Life With Father. Clive's character acting led him to appear in numerous comic and serious roles in films.
For many, his most memorable turn was appearing alongside Michael Caine in the original 1969 version of The Italian Job in a scene said to have been ad-libbed by the pair.
Clive, playing the manager of a garage that has been looking after a sportscar belonging to Charlie Croker (Caine) while he has been serving a jail sentence, names the final bill as £200. Croker, who tells him that his absence has been due to time spent shooting tigers in India, hands over part of a sizeable wad of cash which has been stashed in the car's engine.
"Yes, you must have shot an awful lot of tigers sir," says Clive's character, licking his lips and counting the notes.
"Yes, I used a machine gun," replies Croker.
His television appearances also included Robert's Robots, Rising Damp, The Dick Emery Show, The Perils of Pendragon, The Sweeney, Great Expectations, Z Cars, Man in a Suicase, The Saint, The Gnomes of Dulwich and The History of Mr Polly. He appeared in the first Wednesday Play, Wear a Very Big Hat, broadcast by BBC 1 in 1964. Clive also featured in, Lady Windermere's Fan, One Way Out and The Ten Percenters.
In 1977, he co-wrote, with J.D. Gilman, the historical novel KG 200, a story about a secret Luftwaffe unit during the Second World War which became an international bestseller.
