I swear I'm not mad, I'm absolutely possitive I saw a programme in the late 1990's (maybe 2000) about Death's apprentice (or someone who cheated death) it would have been shown on channel 4 or 5 I just can't for the life of me remember the name or who the star was.
Karl Howman played an apprentice angel of death who is sent to collect the soul of a woman played by Geraldine McEwan who is so dotty he hasn't the heart to do it. In the end Mulberry is helping her cheat death and becomes her protector. Ran for a couple of seasons I think.
I remember quite liking 'Mulberry' but thinking it was maybe a little too unusual for a mainstream audience. It had quality writers and a good cast but was cancelled after two series, as you say, which meant it never reached its natural conclusion.
